Two-step equations Today’s Lesson: What: Why:
. . . so I can solve both multiplication and division two-step equations . How: . . . by taking accurate notes, participating in ALL practice activities, and completing IXL homework with a 70% or greater.
2
What two steps must we follow when solving a two-step equation?
3
two What are Two-Step Equations??
Two-step equations are equations that have __________ operations . In other words, there are TWO numbers on the same side with “x.” two How do we solve a two-step equation ?? Step One: Add or subtract (zero pairs) to get rid of the ______________________. Step Two: Multiply or divide to get rid of the _______________________. constant coefficient
4
Multiplication Two-Step Equations:
Example: 3x = 26 +(-2) +(-2) (add “-2” to both sides to make zero pair) 3x = (re-write equation) (divide by 3 on both sides) x = 8
5
Multiplication Guided examples:
6
Your turn: 4) x = 20 5) = 12 – x x = 5 x = 10
7
Division two-step equations:
Example: 𝑥 − = 13 +(-3) (- 3) (add “-3” to both sides to make zero pair) 𝑥 −2 = (re-write equation) ( −𝟐 𝟏 ) 𝑥 −2 = 10( −𝟐 𝟏 ) (multiply by “flip” on both sides) x = -20
8
Division Guided examples: 1) 𝑥 2 + -7 = 11 2) 2 = 𝑥 −3 - 6 3)
𝑥 = 11 2) 2 = 𝑥 − 3) 𝑥 = -20 x = -24 x = 36 x = -62 # 3 is different Multiply on both sides by the denominator FIRST!
9
Your turn: 4) 𝑥+4 2 = -5 5) 21 = 𝑥 3 + -4 6) 3 + 𝑥 −5 = -7 x = 75
𝑥 = -5 5) 21 = 𝑥 6) 3 + 𝑥 −5 = -7 x = 75 x = -14 x = 50
