Key concepts What does pascal’s principle say about change in fluid pressure? How does the hydraulic system work?

Transmitting pressure in a fluid
Fill up a water bottle to the point there is no more air in the bottle. Place the lid on the bottle and lay it on its side. Press on the bottle with your thumb in one spot. With your right thumb, pick a new spot to press. What does your left thumb feel? Does the water pressure increase, decrease, or remain the same? How do you know?

Pascal’s principle When force is applied to a confined fluid, the change in pressure is transmitted equally to all parts of the fluid. This is Pascal’s principle Fluids, due to their volume exert pressure on any surface it touches. This principle has lead to the modern hydraulic systems.

Hydraulic systems Hydraulic systems: uses liquids to transmit pressure in a confined fluid. A hydraulic system multiplies force by applying the force to a small survece area. The increase in pressure is then transmitted to another part of the confined fluid, which pushes on a larger surface area. hydraulic lifts Hydraulic breaks
