2 Do This In Remembrance of Me
What the New Testament Teaches About the Lord’s Supper in Worship to God Prepared by Chris Reeves * Skyline church of Christ Gospel Meeting * May 17, 2015

3 Lord Supper: Who? The Lord’s supper was instituted by Jesus: bread [unleavened – Deut. 16:1-8] and fruit of the vine (Mt. 26:26-30; Mk. 14:22-26; Lk. 22:14-20; 1 Cor. 11:23) The Lord’s supper was taken by Christians; it was not “open communion” for non-Christians (Acts 2:42)

4 Lord Supper: Who? The Lord’s supper was a congregational activity; it was not served individually at home (Ac. 20:7; 1 Cor. 11:17,18,20,33,34)

5 Lord Supper: When? The Lord’s supper was taken regularly on Sunday, the first day of the week (Acts 2:42; 20:7)

6 Lord Supper: What? The Lord’s supper is an act of obedience to God - “… take … eat … drink … this do …” (Lk. 22:19) The Lord’s supper, in contrast to the Passover, is related to three “new” things: a new kingdom/covenant; a new deliverance from sin; a new day of observance, Sunday (Mt. 26:29)

7 Lord Supper: What? The Lord’s supper was not a common meal (Acts 2:42,46; 20:7,11; 1 Cor. 11:33-34)

8 The Lord Supper Is … Appreciation (Mt. 26:27; Mk. 14:23; Lk. 22;17,19; 1 Cor. 11:24) – what God’s people give to God Dedication (Mt. 26:28; Lk. 22:20) – what God expects his people to do Commemoration (Lk. 22:19; 1 Cor. 11:24-26) – what God’s people remember about God’s gift

9 The Lord Supper Is … Participation (1 Cor. 10:16-17) – what God’s people and God share with each other Revitalization (1 Cor. 11:20) – what God gives his people through the “supper” Proclamation (1 Cor. 11:26) – what God’s people tell others about the Lord

10 The Lord Supper Is … Anticipation (1 Cor. 11:26) – what God’s people hope for in the future Examination (1 Cor. 11:28) – what God’s people discern about themselves and Christ

11 Five “Looks” of the Lord’s Supper
Backward – to the cross of Christ Forward – to the coming of Christ Inward – to the self examination Outward – to others in proclamation Upward – to God in obedience and thanks

12 How Can We Improve Our Participation in the Lord’s Supper?
Come to the table with a dedicated life (1 Cor. 10:21) Focus on the spiritual, not the physical (1 Cor. 11:20-22, 33-34) Use scripture to help you “do this in remembrance” (1 Cor. 11:23-26)

13 How Can We Improve Our Participation in the Lord’s Supper?
Take seriously our discernment of the Lord’s body and of ourselves (1 Cor. 11:27-32) [ Parents, teach your children at an early age why you are taking the Lord’s supper! ]
