2 Questions and introduction
This is our medieval medicine presentation. It is about the lasting effects that medieval medicine had on the modern world and our current year. Medieval medicine shaped how our doctors, surgeons and other medical professions think today. Where did medieval doctors go wrong in their procedures? Why did most religions think medicine was wrong?

3 Doctors in Medieval times
Doctors in Medieval times only treated the rich. The poor were never treated since they didn’t have the money or reputation to stay alive. Never even on occasion were they saved, even if their injury was life threatening or their illness was lethal. Barbers or dentists were quite popular along the Medieval for curing illnesses and injuries too. It was so uncommon for anybody to see a doctor, they were well respected and only for a certain class. Most people in the medieval times never saw a doctor only the rich people.

4 Religious cures Christianity had a much different way of curing sick and injured people. Their cure was God. Some believed that if they were injured, they had sinned or did something to anger God. Some believed that God would heal their injuries or illness, though it would only work on coincidence. They would rely mostly on prayers and faith. Many Christians believed that medicine was a sin, therefore they would avoid using it at all costs in an attempt to please God, thus making them worse.

5 Some of the spices and herbs
The spices that were used in medical practices were most commonly pepper, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, saffron, turmeric, cardamom and mace. Another spice that they used is mace - A spice made from the dried fleshy covering of the nutmeg seed.

6 Epidemics and illnesses in medieval ages
There were a range of epidemics and pandemics in the medieval ages due to poor health and care for themselves. They lived in terrible conditions for keeping themselves well, therefore illness broke out easily and it could spread within a few hours. Death was far too common in young ages and it was so rare for anybody to reach old age.

7 The Black plague The Black Plague was a medieval pandemic which wiped out a majority of the population due to doctors being uneducated. Few survived this deadly plague which caused black boils to appear all over the skin. The doctors that treated this disease were horrifying to see now and it was back then. Plague doctors wore bird beak masks and long robe-like gowns that would project them from the evil germs that would lead to many deaths. They carried a long stick to poke at bodies to make sure they were dead. This is how they survived the plague. Mass graves were made to dump bodies into since graveyards were becoming crowded.

8 Religious effect Many people who belonged to a popular religion like Christianity believed that God was punishing them in the form of the plague or another illness or injury. They would often whip themselves or harm themselves to please God. They thought that by harming themselves, their illness would disappear.

9 The skill that doctors had
Believe it or not, a lot of doctors were well educated and smart in the topic of health. Some were actually quite skilled in surgery and healing and they could cure somebody in the matter of days. They could help wounds easily, yet their skill would not be helpful in some outbreaks and injuries. A lot were not smart, though. Sometimes, the only cure in their mind was to chop off a leg if a minor inconvenience were to happen!

10 Mentally ill People who were mentally ill were seen as dangerous, and in some cases, miracles. People who claimed to hear voices from god were, on the rare occasion, seen as miracles or prophets. On the other hand, other mental illnesses were treated as deadly diseases. Patients were locked up or sometimes killed for something they couldn’t control.
