Writing Groups Week 3
2
Arrive on Time This is like a class. Arrive on time.
Don’t make others wait for you. It also affects your Writing Group grade.
3
Load your Videos in Advance
The video page should be up before the meeting starts. It takes time to log in and load videos. You want this to be done before the conversation starts. You can save time by loading videos and allowing the ads to run. After the ads are complete, press pause. Load them all in separate tabs at the same time, in this same way.
4
Grade Sheets Be sure to write a paragraph. Use whole numbers.
A paragraph is not a list of sentences. How many is 4 to 6? If you are sitting next to Andreas, please make sure he understands the meaning of “paragraph” and “4 to 6 sentences” Use whole numbers. Do not give scores like 3.8.

Comments on Youku Put your name in front of the comment.
Leeds: I like your idea about improving listening. At 1:12 you said, “We has.” That is one of your grammar target problems, right? Graham: What is that noise in the background? You said you made no progress, but in Physics class you asked a question. I remember you corrected yourself. So that was some progress!
6
Use your own videos as practice
This can be very helpful. You can check your own image/sound quality. You can try to use the target grammar or vocabulary in the video. You can use the video to improve other speaking issues.
7
Watch your own videos After you record it, you can . . .
Listen to your own pronunciation. Make sure you have good eye contact. Listen for your target grammar. Listen or watch for other things, too!
8
Check the framing If possible, check your framing.
You might set up your camera so that you can see the screen. You can get a friend to help you set the frame. Be sure the friend knows what you want!
9
Use the rule of thirds. Divide your image into thirds. 9 equal parts
2 vertical lines 2 horizontal lines
10
The rule of thirds The intersections are very important!
15
Where are the eyes?
19
Two people in frame Check the location of the eyes in the frame.
22
This is a shot of a YouTube vlogger.
She is centered in the frame. Is she using the rule of thirds? How is she using it? Where are her eyes in the frame?
27
Rule of Thirds Use it in your videos for next week. Experiment!
What works? What does not work?
28
Rule of Thirds Where should you look? At the camera? At each other? Both?
