General Safety Rules

Rule 1 Report to work rested, alert, and fit to give your full attention to the job.

Rule 2 Alcohol and drug use is prohibited.

Rule 3 Report unsafe acts and unsafe conditions to your supervisor or safety committee representative promptly.

Rule 4 Operate only the equipment for which you are authorized and properly trained.

Rule 5 Follow proper lockout/tagout procedures.

Rule 6 Only authorized personnel are permitted to remove guards for repair or cleaning.

Rule 7 Make sure all guards and other protective devices are in place before operating equipment.

Rule 8 An operator should also make note of all emergency stop buttons on the machinery.

Rule 9 Never place hands or any other body parts into operating equipment for any reason.

Rule 10 Make sure work areas are cleared before you turn on the equipment.

Rule 11 Never leave an unattended machine running.

Rule 12 Never make any repairs or adjustments on any machine while it is in motion.

Rule 13 Keep aisles, walkways, and working areas clear of slipping/tripping hazards.

Rule 14 If tools or equipment start to malfunction, notify your supervisor immediately.

Rule 15 Never use any electrical tools near water.

Rule 16 If an electrical chord has a three-prong plug, make sure that the third prong is not damaged or missing.

Rule 17 When eye protection is needed for a job, use only the eye protection authorized by your supervisor.

Rule 18 When dressing for work, never wear torn or loose fitting clothing, gloves, or jewelry that might get caught in machinery or come in contact with electrical equipment. Wear sturdy, leather top shoes.

Rule 19 Keep long hair tied up and back for operator safety.

Rule 20 Use protective gloves for rough or sharp parts.

Rule 21 When working with chemicals or near flying debris, always wear protective clothing and eye protection.

Rule 22 Chemicals are only to be handled by those employees who are trained and authorized

Rule 23 Keep a material safety data sheet on each chemical or hazardous material used.

Rule 24 Don’t create conditions that promote fires.

Rule 25 Learn where fire extinguishers are located and how to operate them.

Rule 26 Know the locations of fire/safety exits and evacuation procedures.

Rule 27 In case of a fire, activate the nearest pull-station alarm, notify your supervisor and follow the company’s emergency action plan.

Rule 28 Never use chairs, boxes or makeshift platforms to reach high places. Use a ladder that is specifically designed for that purpose.

Rule 29 Inspect ladders before use. Never use a ladder that is broken or defective.

Rule 30 Never stand on the top two steps of any stepladder.

Rule 31 Never jump off ladders or platforms.

Rule 32 Always watch where you are walking and stay away from potential hazards.

Rule 33 Watch for slippery or uneven surfaces. Do not run at work.

Rule 34 Use only authorized walkways, especially in warehouses or around machinery. Never stand or walk on conveyors. No climbing on any storage racks.

Rule 35 When walking up and down stairways, use handrails to avoid a possible fall.

Rule 36 Follow proper lifting procedures at all times.

Rule 37 Refrain from fighting, horseplay or distracting fellow workers.

Rule 41 Actively support and participate in the company’s efforts to provide a safe and productive workplace.
