Lab Zone Guided Inquiry Investigate: What tasks can a machine do?
3
Materials Safety goggles Common objects –Rulers –String –Tape –Dominoes –Balloons –Pencils –Anything else you can think of to make a machine

What To Do… 1.Plan a device to do a task. Your device could make a toy car move, push a marble, make a noise, or lift something. Or make a device do something else. 2.Think about how your task could be done. 3.Design and build a device made of 2 or more simple machines to do your task.
5
What To Do… 4. Describe your device. 5. Predict whether your device will do its task. 6. Test your prediction. 7. How well your device does the task. Investigate what might have caused problems. 8. Change your device so that it works even better
6
What To Do… Use this chart to track your progress. Task Design Describe and Draw Materials Prediction Test Test results Change
7
Explain Your Results 1. What task did you decide to do? 2. How did you test your prediction? 3. Explain how your change made your device work better?
8
A Step Further Thinking of your machine. How would removing one part of your machine affect how well it works? Demonstrate that in a machine consisting of many parts, the parts usually influence or interact with one another.
