1 Unicef… UNICEF is a leading humanitarian and development agency working globally for the rights of every child. Child rights begin with safe shelter, nutrition, protection from disaster and conflict and traverse the life cycle: pre-natal care for healthy births, clean water and sanitation, health care and education. UNICEF has spent nearly 70 years working to improve the lives of children and their families. Working with and for children through adolescence and into adulthood requires a global presence whose goal is to produce results and monitor their effects. UNICEF also lobbies and partners with leaders, thinkers and policy makers to help all children realize their rights—especially the most disadvantaged.

4 What is a Photo Essay? A photo essay is when it takes more than one image to tell a story. Often a photojournalist will revisit a site several times to document changes, or use different subjects, including buildings, animals, and bodies of water, to tell a whole story. One image can become the “icon” for a movement, or even a decade!

5 SJ 12: Photo Essay Assignment
Your assignment is to create a photo essay. We will display in the learning commons in December. We will also re-mount these for Expo. You will be working in a group drawn at random. Your group needs to decide the topic that you will focus on.

6 What is to be included in your photo essay?
8 powerful photos all related to your topic and that tell a story about that topic A 1-2 sentence caption for each photo A 3-4 sentence blurb for each photo discussing some key facts, statistics, concerns, points about your topic, etc – make sure your comments are relevant to each photo A title page stating your topic and listing your group members

7 How is this to be displayed?
Photos will need to be printed out in colour or b/w The title page and each photo will be mounted on 8.5 x 11 piece of black cardstock Captions and blurbs must be typed out in a large sized very readable font (maybe 18+) These will also be mounted on black cardstock – but will be cut to fit You will also need to include proper MLA Citations for both the information you use and the photos

8 The personal piece… You will each need to explain why YOU feel TWO the photos your group has chosen are effective Please discuss each photo in a well thought-out paragraph (at least 150 words per paragraph) This is similar to the assignment you did before. Consider: What is the subject matter in this particular photo? What makes it powerful? How does it make you feel? How does it tell your story?

9 The Topic You may not choose a photo essay that already exists!
You must decide as a group on your specific topic – shouldn’t just be “Poverty” but something like the UNICEF photo essays Each of you is responsible for finding 2 photos and doing the research for those

10 Referencing You must create an MLA Citation for each photo you use
You can use this website to help you walk through the proper steps for each photo: format/digital-image-citation This citations must be printed out and mounted on black card stock near each blurb/photo
