2 Rule of Zero Charge All ionic compounds are neutral. Every time a metal atom and a nonmetal atom bond, they form a compound with an overall zero charge, the charges on metal cations and the nonmetal anions add up to zero.

3 Vocabulary Cation- a positively charged ion, loses its electrons Anion- a negatively charged ion, gains electrons Ion-an atom that either gained or lost electrons Subscript -In chemical formulas the number of atoms in a molecule is written as a subscript, so we write H2O for water which has two atoms of hydrogen for each one of oxygen.
