State of Matter Volume Shape Structure/Energy
constant OR changing to volume of container? Shape constant or changing to shape of container? Structure/Energy How close together are the molecules and how much energy to they have? Solid Liquid Gas
2
Behavior of Gases Volume, Temperature and Pressure affect the behavior of gases!! Volume- the amount of space of the gas container Temperature- average kinetic energy (movement) of particles Pressure- collisions of tiny gas particles More collisions= higher pressure Less collisions= lower pressure
3
Inverse Relationship- V & P
Increase pressure Decrease pressure Increase volume Decrease volume WITHOUT CHANGING THE AMOUNT OF GAS MOLECULES in the container--SAME AMOUNT OF GAS!!
4
Direct Relationship- V & T
Increase volume Increase temperature Decrease Temperature Decrease volume
5
Direct Relationship- P & T
decrease pressure increase pressure decrease temperature increase temperature
6
Remove gas Decrease pressure Add gas Increase pressure
7
Physical Properties of Gases
Gases have no definite shape or volume Gases are compressible Gases have low density Gases spontaneously diffuse Gases exert uniform pressure on the walls of the container

Can Crushing What variables are causing the can to crush? In your notes: Make observations!! Write a description and draw diagrams to explain what happens. 1. Put small amount of water in a clean soda can. 2. Heat the water in the can on the hot plate until you see steam coming from the can. 3. IMMEDIATELY, use tongs to turn the can upside down into a tub of ice water.
