Introducing the Torquer HALO

The Problem In the UK alone, according to HSE statistics, in 2015/16, 144 workers were killed at work and an estimated 622,000 workers suffered non-fatal injuries as a result of work activity. The charts show that 15 out of the 144 workers killed was as a result of being struck by a moving object, and an estimated 61,000 non-fatal injuries also occurred due to workers being struck by moving objects.

The Problem Many accidents both on and offshore are caused by human contact with heavy loads. Most cranes are unable to control the orientation of their loads. Ground crew have to perform the orientation using tag lines or other physical contact. This often places workers in close proximity to very heavy moving loads.

The Solution Torquer Ltd was set up in August 2013 to design, build and launch a specialised product, the Torquer HALO (Hands free Autonomous Load Orientation), to solve this problem, using a very simple, low tech, low cost remote controlled solution. Following the development of working prototypes the company designed and fabricated the first Torquer HALO units aimed at the offshore and dockside lifting environment, which have undergone extensive and successful field trials.

The Torquer HALO The company have since developed a smaller, lighter Torquer HALO unit for the construction environment for controlling the orientation of loads up to 11 tons. This unit is being trialed shortly, and will be going into production in Q1 of 2018.

The Torquer HALO So how does it work?
The unit is comprised of a circular tank suspended from the crane which contains water in the annulus. A radio controlled thruster is set with its propellers in the water. Spinning water around the helical tunnel clockwise or anticlockwise produces a torque which turns the unit in the opposite direction. With the Torquer HALO’s arms attached to the lifting slings it can then turn the load using the slings.
