Chapter 8 Some substances dissolve to form solutions faster and more easily than others
2
Section 8.1 Making Solutions: Solutes & Solvents
3
Dissolve To mix a solute completely with a solvent to form a solution; the physical properties of the solute and solvent combine into one set of properties.
4
Solute A substance that can be dissolved in a solvent, to form a solution.
5
Solvent A substance into which a solute dissolves, to form a solution.
6
Soluble Able to dissolve in a particular solvent.
7
Insoluble Unable to dissolve in a particular solvent.
8
Concentration & Solubility
Section 8.2 Concentration & Solubility
9
Concentrated Solution
A solution that has a large mass of dissolved solute for a certain quantity of solvent.
10
Dilute Solution A solution that contains a small mass of solute for a certain quantity of solvent.
11
Concentration The quantity of solute that is dissolved in a certain quantity of solvent.
12
Saturated Solution A solution in which no more of a solute will dissolve at a particular temperature.
13
Unsaturated Solution A solution in which more solute can be dissolved in the solvent at a particular temperature.
14
Solubility The mass of a certain solute that can dissolve in a certain volume or mass of solvent, at a certain temperature.
