Act 3 Scene 4 - Question 1 How does Malvolio’s soliloquy (lines 71-92) reveal that he deceives himself as much as the others have deceived him? Notice how he misinterprets Olivia’s reactions in order to support his belief in her affection for him. Use textual evidence to support your response.
10
Act 3 Scene 4 - Q 1 Answer Malvolio misinterprets and reads into Olivia’s reaction to his odd behaviour. Malvolio is so arrogant that he thinks that “fellow” means her companion, rather than her servant. Later, he believes that Olivia must dismiss him in person as she cannot profess her love outright due to her high status. It would be improper for a lady of her wealth and education to act otherwise with anyone. Given that Malvolio is very proper, this makes him admire Olivia even more. He feels he has “limed her” as Olivia ensures that someone looks after Malvolio in his current state (3.4.72). Therefore, despite Olivia’s disinterest, Malvolio thinks she cares for him deeply.
11
Act 3 Scene 4 - Question 2 Using the insights you gained from the experience, compose the journal entry which Antonio might have written after his denial and rejection by the man he thought to be Sabastian.
