Meeting December 2001 :  Participants: Statistics Netherlands (CBS), Dutch City Network (DCN), Ministry of the Interior  Outcome : - Comments on Eurostat proposal (21/12/2001) - Choice of cities - Outlines organisational setting CBS (national co-ordinator) and DCN (city co-ordinator) Follow-up: Letter from the Minister for Major Cities Policies to the city authorities (January 2002)

5 Achievements so far: Availability of data
Method inventory:  SN: data at hand / easily made available  Cities: add missing data at CBS (at hand / easily made available) Third parties: add missing data at CBS / cities Result global inventory: 80 % of variables available Refinement inventory and start classification of variables

CITY = Gemeente LUZ: NUTS 3 as proxy  Availability of data  NUTS 3 based on commuting (stability analysis)  Result analysis Eurostat criterion (50% living in urban region): - 7 cities: one NUTS 3 region each - 2 cities: two NUTS 3 Region each - 1 city: does not satisfy criterion

Criteria  Homogeneity / maximum variation (typology under construction)  Population Size  Neighbourhoods (formerly census tracts) as building blocks  Existing units for local administration / local policies Consultation round between SN and cities (3 cities left) Possible outcome: mix

10 Achievements so far: Typology at Sub-City level
Size of local settlement (five types) Typology based on demographic and socio-economic characteristics for each size type separately Method: factor analysis followed by clustering analysis
