1 The Circulatory System
Notes

2 Essential Question What is the function of the circulatory system and how does it promote homeostasis in the body?

3 Sections The circulatory system is divided into 3 sections:
coronary circulation pulmonary circulation systemic circulation

4 I. Coronary Circulation: The Heart
It is an organ made out of cardiac tissue It is made up of four compartments Right and Left Atriums: the upper chambers that RECEIVES BLOOD COMING INTO THE HEART. Right and Left Ventricles: the lower chambers that PUMP BLOOD OUT OF THE HEART.

5 3. Fact: Our Hearts Contract or Beat about once every second of every day of our lives.  The heart beats more than 2.5 million times in an average life span.  The only time the Heart gets a Rest is Between Beats. 4. Heart attack: when the coronary circulation is blocked, oxygen and nutrients cannot reach all of the cells of the heart.

6 II. Pulmonary Circulation
The RIGHT SIDE of the Heart pumps Blood From The BODY INTO THE LUNGS, WHERE OXYGEN POOR BLOOD (DEOXYGENATED, USUALLY SHOWN IN BLUE) GIVES UP CARBON DIOXIDE AND PICKS UP OXYGEN. The LEFT SIDE of the Heart pumps OXYGEN RICH BLOOD (OXYGENATED, USUALLY SHOWN IN RED) FROM THE LUNGS TO THE REST OF THE BODY EXCEPT THE LUNGS.

7

8 III. Systemic Circulation
Oxygen - rich blood moves to all of your organs and body tissues, except the heart and lungs and oxygen - poor blood returns to the heart.

9

10 IV. Blood Vessels Arteries - blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart. Veins: The blood vessels that carry blood back to the heart. Capillaries: microscopic blood vessels that connect the arteries and veins
