MINDS-ON: If this course was about analyzing roses, what questions would you ask using the different perspectives that we have discussed so far: Formalist Theory Archetype Theory Psychoanalytic Theory For example, if you were analyzing this rose using the Feminist Theory, you’d probably ask: Why do women have to receive a rose from a man? Can a woman give a rose to a man? Does the rose symbolize women’s submission to men? Why does society believe that roses connote femininity? Would a man be considered less masculine if he said he liked flowers/roses?

To know the differences between a good analysis and an outstanding analysis. To understand how to apply the elements of a good analysis. How did you like “A Jury of Her Peers”? What was the theme of this short story? What Formalist/Psychoanalytic/Archetypal questions can you make for this essay? When we read this literary essay on this short story, I want you to think of: How did the student structure the essay? How does it follow the MLA format? Does it answer your questions? How could we make this essay better? Thesis; Evidence; Analysis; Perspective

Submission Guidelines
Failure to follow these guidelines will result in work being handed back with a late penalty (-10%) Always write in pen (blue or black ink only). Always write legibly. Always use MLA format. Always staple in the upper left corner. Always staple in the correct order. Always indent (tab) at the beginning of every paragraph. Always underline titles of books if writing by hand (Lord of the Flies); always italicise titles of books if typing on the computer (Lord of the Flies) Always use “ ” for titles of articles , short stories, and poetry (“Global Warming Linked to Worse Flu Seasons”) Always use Times New Roman font. Font should always be size 12. Always cite your sources, even if you put it in your own words. [Automatic zero if you are caught plagiarizing.]

Analysis; Perspective
To be able to analyze a passage from a short story use a literary theory. Turn to page 6 of “The Veldt” (notice the quotation marks). I want you to analyze the dialogue between the father and the children. If you want to choose another quotation, then you can. I want you to analyze it using the Formalist and Psychoanalytic lenses/approaches. SUCCESS CRITERIA: Just make a T-Chart with one column for Formalism and the other for Psychoanalysis. FLIPPED CLASSROOM (not mandatory): Try to do some independent research on Feminism and Marxism. We will learn this next week.
