Spindle disassembly during meiosis I is triggered by Imp1-dependent transport (green spheres) of spindle disassembly factors (orange spheres) in wild-type (WT) cells. Spindle disassembly in meiosis II is Imp1 independent and facilitated by vNEBD (dotted blue lines) where nuclear and cytoplasmic contents mix. The timing of Imp1-dependent and Imp1-independent spindle disassembly affects the ploidy and viability of the four haploid meiotic products, as shown through analysis of the indicated mutants.
