Instructor vs. Consultant
Instructor- Employed by a company to be a trainer for them Consultant- self-employed trainer What are the two times of the year that trainers see a dramatic increase in clients?

Are you fit for the job? Personality and characteristics: Appearance:
Caring, knowledgeable, motivational, good sense of humor, leadership skills, positive attitude People person Appearance: Do you look healthy? Physically fit? Jobs: Personal trainers, fitness specialists, exercise leaders, health/fitness directors, health/fitness instructors, and strength and conditioning specialists Education background: Depends on what type of certification you want to get p.3-5 **All certification requires that you are certified in CPR!** Can not take the certification test unless you are certified!

Working with your clients
Establishing rapport Learn and remember some personal information about the client Establishing good communication Take part in communicating with your client. They may be intimidated by you, so make sure and keep lines of communication open!

First session with your client
Make advance contact Call and remind your client about the appointment. Let the client know what you will be doing and let them know an estimated length of the appointment (1-1 ½ hours). Tell them to wear lose clothing and bring water At the first and every meeting Always greet with smile and handshake Have an enthusiastic attitude

First session cont Your appearance Extra time for 1st visit
Your level of fitness, your exercise clothing and your attitude will all influence your success Dress accordingly Extra time for 1st visit Allow for 1 ½ hours: 30 minutes for disclaimers and other paperwork (insurance forms, personal information sheet, goals, etc) Walk them through the techniques on all machines DO NOT DO STRENOUS EXERCISE AT THIS VISIT!!!

First session cont Educational materials
Your client will appreciate any information you can give them: brochures, pamphlets, and other handouts that tell them about you and your fitness program What to include: Informative websites, injury prevention, correct lifting techniques, ICE (for the client with injuries) The client should sign an informed consent form (liability release) before you begin services to him/her
