McCord Middle School Preseason Coaches Meeting
SPRING ATHLETIC SEASON February 10, 2016

Goals 1. Understand the expectations for the athletic department for the 2014 Fall season. 2. Build relationships with other coaches to foster communication, collaboration, and experiential education for student-athletes.

Team Operations Head coaches are ultimately responsible for the operations of your program. They are both the leaders and managers of those members of the program, including assistant coaches and student-athletes. Partnerships with key stakeholders, including the booster group are critical for your success.

Team Operations Positive Environment – Create an environment that supports, includes, and develops all athletes. Your messages are important!! Use positive language, support kids, and remember the impact you have. Always put yourself in a position that you and I can always defend. Student Discipline-Keep parents and A.D. informed

Communication The key to any successful organization!
Communication should be appropriate, professional and inclusive. There should be appropriate levels of privacy (FERPA/HIPPA) Contact me regarding any concerns or issues that you may have or that arise from incidents that may occur as soon as possible. If there is a major disciplinary issue or medical emergency, contact me immediately. Confirm games, officials, busses weekly . Establish a communication system regarding practice/team events Social Media and Communication- Do not friend athletes on social media sites. Only send group texts. Do not use profanity or degrading language

Vertical Alignment Middle School programming as an extension of the high school programming Common planning time for middle school and high school programs Collaboration with Worthington Youth Boosters Visit practices/games Common vocabulary and curriculum guides, Youth Camps, Coaching clinics for WYB coaches.

Personnel Requirements for every coach (paid or volunteer)
Board Approval Fingerprinted for background check CPR Certified 2 Hour Pupil Activity (PAV)—First Aid Fundamentals of Coaching class-required to renew a PAV after January 1, 2010. Concussion Certification – ODE approved course Sports Safety Training Seminar - Information for classes is available at: (search pupil activity) (Safe & Drug-Free Schools Consortium) Coach Education, then First Aide for Coaches) Coaches can not work with kids until these items are completed Paid coaches also need Public School Works courses ALL Coaches compensation must go through the Board of Ed.

Pre-Season Requirements for coaches
Attend rules interpretation meeting Verify Eligibility of all athletes--Must be listed on your roster as eligible. Team Policies/expectations must be on file in Athletic Office Check all equipment and facilities for safety Create Safety Plan and review with coaching staff Meet with Athletic trainer to review emergency procedures

Parent / Athlete Pre-season meeting
March 10 – ATOD meeting 6:00-Group meeting in Gym—Group meeting will cover: Student code of conduct and ATOD Social media Various rules and regulations We will move to individual team meetings at 6:20 Laptops will be available for parents/ studetns to register with Final Forms

Topics to discuss: Coaching philosophy Playing time philosophy Athlete expectations Attendance requirements for practices, games, and team functions Provide schedule of events for the season Anti-hazing message Assist with Final Forms –I am available too Co-Curricular handbook is on the district website if they need additional information--Be sure to reference this for families.

Student Forms and Fees Coaches are responsible to collect the following and submit to athletic office: Alphabetical team roster (keep this updated throughout the season) *Physical examination form (must have collected to practice) *Emergency Medical Card All other forms are on ‘Final Forms’ Participation fee ($125)—additional $10 fee for each participant in a non OHSAA sanctioned sport (must have to participate in a contest or scrimmage)

Couple more rules and Regs
When outdoors, please do your best to bring as little dirt inside as possible. Students are NOT permitted to stay after school until their practice begins unless it begins at 4pm Coaches are responsible for all athletes leaving school grounds after practice/ games.

Rain For Practice and Games – Have a safe place from lightning.
Allowed back on fields 30 mins after last instance of thunder Game Rain-outs: Ads make determination by 1pm. On Website, coaches are informed
