Types of Compounds
2
Compound: made up of two or more elements that react together to become stable.
CaCl2
3
Ionic Compounds properties:
contain a metal & non-metal. Metal LOSES electrons, non-metal TAKES electrons. A strong ionic bond forms. Conduct electricity when melted or dissolved. High melting point. Hard and Brittle.
4
Molecular Compounds properties:
Contain 2 or more non-metals Electrons are SHARED between atoms. A weak covalent bond forms. Don’t conduct electricity. Low melting point. Soft and Flexible
5
Types of Compound Lab Purpose: Determine which compounds are ionic or molecular based on their physical properties. Materials & Procedure: See lab handout. Observations: *All observations should be recorded as high/medium/low Compound Solubility Conductivity Melting A. Sucrose B. Sodium chloride C. Corn starch D. Magnesium bromide
6
Analysis: 1. Which of the compounds are ionic and which are molecular? Write a sentence to justify your decision. 2. Draw a Lewis diagram showing the formation of each ionic compound you identified. 3. Using the ionic compound’s name, find its chemical formula.
