1 Lab.343

2 Experiment (6) Alkaline hydrolysis of ethyl acetate (conductance method)

3 Electrical conductivity
A measure of the ability of an aqueous solution to conduct electricity

4 Electrolytic Properties
Electrolyte solution: contains a number of ions. Strong electrolyte . Ex NaOH weak electrolyte . Ex CH3COOH Nonelectrolyte solution: does not contains a ions. Ex. C2H5OH

5 ethyl acetate hydroxide ion acetate ion ethanol C0 C∞

6 Secand order reaction equation
1/a-x = Kt + 1/a Kt = 1/(a-x ) - 1/a Kt = a- (a-x)/ a(a-x) Kt = x/ a(a-x) Kt = x/ A0(A0-x)

7 Kt = C0 – Ct / A0 (C0 - C∞ - (C0 – Ct ) ) Kt = C0 – Ct / A0 (Ct - C∞ )
Kt = x/ A0(A0-x) A0 ≡ C0 - C∞ X ≡ C0 – Ct Kt = C0 – Ct / A0 (C0 - C∞ - (C0 – Ct ) ) Kt = C0 – Ct / A0 (Ct - C∞ )

8 C0 – Ct / Ct - C∞ Slope = K A0 t

9 Prepare: Solid Liquid Volume concentration NaOH CH3COOC2H5 100ml 0.05M
CH3COONa 0.01M

10 Procedure: 1- Measure the conductance of 0.01M NaOH & CH3COONa at room temp. 2-

11 3- Mix the two solutions , shake thoroughly, place the conductance probe in the mixture and take readings of the conductance
