Why undertake SHE Audits and Safety Tours?
Auditing and inspection (Safety Tours) are critical elements of the STFC SHE Management System. They: provide management with feedback on the implementation of STFC SHE Policy & Codes; maintain the profile of SHE management and workplace safety & housekeeping; identify how codes can be better implemented, making sure that their recommendations are acted upon. Audit and inspection are key aspects of the STFC’s Corporate Governance framework

Key features Establishes new requirement for a coherent STFC wide - two level SHE audit programme - approved by the STFC SHE Committee: Compliance audits - “Are we following the codes and can they be improved?”, all codes every 3 years; and System audit – “Are we doing what we should be doing, is system working as a whole – delivering STFC expectations”, undertaken 4 yearly. Formally establishes the current Safety Tour programmes under Departmental Directors.

Risk based compliance audit programme, using trained and independent auditors – internal & external – objectively based across all STFC sites, programme and recommendations monitored by SHE Group. System audit undertaken by independent external experts. Results reported to those audited, STFC management - EB and OB, and Council & Audit Committee. Safety Tours Department risk based programmes, recommendations monitored by Department – encourages cross auditing by managers, using Trade Union Safety Representatives SHE Enterprise to store and manage audits, tours and their recommendations
