2 What is food poisoning? We can get food poisoning if we eat food which hasn’t been stored, prepared or cooked safely. Food poisoning can make us feel very ill. The most common symptoms are: Feeling and being sick Stomach pain Diarrhoea

3 Germs Food poisoning is caused by harmful germs in our food
We might not be able to see germs – but they are all around us!

4 Not all germs are harmful
Types of Germs Bacteria Mould Yeast Viruses Not all germs are harmful – some are helpful!

5 Germy needs! Germs need 4 key things to be able to grow. These are:
Warmth Moisture Time Food How do you think we can stop germs growing in our food?

6 How do germs get in our food?
Germs live in animals so they can be found in raw meats. We can kill them by cooking the meat properly. Soil contains many germs so we need to make sure all fresh fruit and vegetables are washed properly before preparing them.

7 carry and spread germs – so keep them out of the kitchen!
How do germs get in our food? Animals can carry germs which can get in our food. So its important to wash our hands after touching animals. Pest and insects carry and spread germs – so keep them out of the kitchen! Rubbish contains germs and can attract pests such as flies and rats – empty the bin and wash your hands!

How do germs get in our food? Dirty equipment and food surfaces can spread germs when we prepare or serve food. Clean up as you go along! Clothes and hair can carry germs – wear aprons and tie long hair back or wear a hat to stop hairs falling into food.

9 Preventing food poisoning!
To prevent food poisoning follow these 5 steps: Wash your hands before preparing and cooking food Store foods correctly, before, during and after cooking Clean work surfaces and equipment before preparing and cooking food Remove animals and rubbish from the kitchen Cook foods for the correct length of time at the correct temperature
