1 Atoms & Molecules LESSON 1.2

2 Atoms are extremely small.
Def: tiny particles that make up all matter. Smallest basic unit of matter. Too tiny to see. Have a mass. Take up space.

3 Atoms If there is matter, it is made out of atoms.
Ex: carbon atom, oxygen atom, any individual atom on the periodic table. Molecules are made out of combinations of atoms. Everything around you, and you are made up of the basic units of matter, ATOMS!

4 Circle your level of understanding of these concepts:

5 Molecules Def: particles formed by the bonding of two or more atoms.
Smallest amount of a substance with the properties of the substance. Ex: water molecules, H2O. A molecule can be more than one of the same atom (O2), or different of atoms (H2O).

6 Water Molecule

7 Circle your level of understanding of these concepts:

8 Atoms and molecules are always in motion.
The arrangement and the motion of the molecules depend on the state of matter. Gas Liquid Solid

9 Gas Gas: The molecules are greatly spaced out and move freely in all directions.

10 Liquid Liquid: The molecules are closer together but they can slide past each other.

11 Solid Solid: The molecules are extremely closer together but they can vibrate in place. Click here

12 Circle your level of understanding of these concepts:

13 Why do dust particles in the air appear to be moving in different directions?
Constantly moving air molecules collide with the dust particles and bounce them around. (Reflecting or absorbing off of the dust particles, causing scattering of the light waves)
