1 Volcanoes Gus Batchelder 3/16/10

2 Shield Volcanoes Shield Volcanoes are wide, sloping volcanoes that are formed when thin layers of lava come out of the vent and dry and harden on top of old layers. Hawaii is made up of shield volcanoes.

3 Composite Volcanoes Composite Volcanoes are tall, cone shaped volcanoes where layers of lava meet layers of ash. Sometimes lava flows meet eruptions of ash, cinders, and bombs. Japan’s Mt. Fuji is a composite volcano.

4 Cinder Cones Cinder Cones are steep, sloping volcanoes that can produce ash, cinders, and bombs. The Colombia Plateau is a cinder cone in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho.

5 Caldera Calderas are huge holes left by volcanoes that collapse. The hole that is left is filled with pieces of the volcano. Sometimes the hole left is filled with rain water, forming a lake.

6 Hot Springs and Geysers
Hot Springs are bodies of water that are heated by magma under the earth’s surface. Geysers Geysers are fountains of water that erupt when under pressure.

7 Bonus Slide- Lava Plateaus
Lava Plateaus are formed when lava flows out of many long cracks. The lava stretches across a great area, then cools and hardens. Over time, other layers of lava harden on top of the previous one, creating a lava plateau. The Deccan Traps in India is one example of a lava plateau.
