Irony, Coincidence, and Bad Luck What is the difference?

Irony When the opposite of what is expected to happen, happens OR the reader is aware of something that the character is not. Example: . A police station is robbed OR In a scary movie, the audience knows the killer is hiding upstairs and the victim runs upstairs to escape.

Coincidence A remarkable connection of events or circumstances without an apparent link Example: You show up to school wearing the same outfit as your best friend.

A misfortunate state resulting from unfavorable circumstances.
Bad Luck A misfortunate state resulting from unfavorable circumstances. Example: You wash your car and then it rains.
