1 Romulus and Remus According to the Roman author Livy. The twins left to found their own city along the Tiber river where there were seven hills.

2 They could not agree on the exact location - Romulus wanted the Palatine Hill and Remus preferred the Aventine Hill.

4 They decided to seek the advice of the gods through augury.
augury - where a priest would divine the will of the gods by studying the flights of birds.

5 Each brother took position on their hill . . .
Remus saw 6 auspicious birds. Romulus saw 12 auspicious birds.

6 Romulus claims the win and begins to build his city.
Remus belittles and makes fun of Romulus' new wall. In final insult to the founder and the new city, he jumps over the wall.

7 Romulus killed him, saying
"Everyone so perish that shall hereafter jump over my wall.”
