Scales- formed from bone Cycloid- smooth, rounded edge Ctenid- toothed outer edge

Operculum- keeps water from flowing in the wrong direction Mouths- terminal in bony; ventral in cartilaginous Teeth- attached to jaw. Do not move forward. Fins- bony fish fins are thin membranes with spines or rays Spines- rigid; support and protection Rays- flexible Caudal fins lobes are about same size

5 Internal Anatomy Big Difference-
Bony fishes have a swim bladder or air bladder. Used to maintain natural buoyancy- ability to maintain certain depth without moving. Fish can regulate how much air it holds Moves up and down in water column Cartilaginous fish have an oily liver. Sink when they stop swimming. Cannot float
