A) Fr. Crozat—Pastor since 1830 1) Theologian—Excellent in Moral Theology 2) Kind, person with good sense. 3) Infirm 4) Very Charitable. B) Fr. Emile Maugenest (b. 5/12/1829; d. 3/10/1918) 1) Friend of Jules Chevalier in the seminary 2) One of the two whom Jules had in mind for his community; ordained: December 17, 1853 3) Known in the seminary for his piety and ability 4) Zealous, extremely sensitive, highly imaginative 5) Sometimes would get overly excited, inconsistent with his evaluations, and was easily influenced by the current waves of opinion 6) Gifted speaker/preacher—captivated audiences; spoke to the heart. C) Fr. Chevalier Reveals his plan (November, 1854 1) Fr. Maugenest receives the news enthusiastically 2) Fr. Corzat gladly approves.

3 D) Novena to the Blessed Virgin
1) Confirmation of God’s will 2) “Since it is Mary who gave to the world Jesus as the blessed fruit of her womb, it is she proclaimed immaculate, who should give the Church, if such is the will of God, this new family of the heart son. She will cause it to be born so to speak, from the divine heart, source of all grace and fecundity. If we are heard , we will take the title of Missionaries of the Sacred Heart.” 3) Fr. Maugenest paints a special picture for the occasion which the altar boys present to Father Chevalier on December 8 at the offering of the High Mass.

HEART A) Novena ends DECEMBER 8, 1854—OUR LADY’S MIRACLE B) Last day of the Novena, word is received that 20,000 francs would be given for a charitable work in Issoudun—”preferably a house of “missionaries.” 1) Mr. Auguste Petit 2) Mr. Philip Bengy 3) Fr. Fernand Labbe de Champgrand 4) Fr. Pierre Gasnier
