Did you know… An NQT has only one chance to complete statutory induction. The Teachers’ Standards will be used to assess an NQT’s performance at the end of the induction period. The induction period is one year – three terms. A suitable monitoring and support programme must be put in place for the NQT, personalised to meet their professional development needs. This must include: Support and guidance from a designated tutor Observation of the NQT’s teaching Regular professional reviews of progress NQT’s observation of experienced teachers A reduced timetable NQTs should have formal assessments – these should be informed by evidence gathered during the assessment period and judgements should be made against the Teachers Standards NQTs should be kept up to date on their progress – there should be no surprises.
4
Opportunities: Be supported whilst you take on the responsibilities of a class teacher Network with other NQTs and teachers Observe other teachers in action Visit other schools Be observed – use this as a chance to reflect on your practice, to identify what your strengths are and which areas you need to develop Research an area of interest to develop your own knowledge and skills

Gap Task A: The learning environment
For our first seminar on Tuesday 10th October we would like you to bring in photos of display/classroom areas that you or your pupils find inspiring, helpful or informative. You will need to explain why you have chosen them and how they are/could be used. These could be in your school, from your placements or from the internet.
9
Mentors: A chance to look at the paperwork and discuss any questions you may have
10
NQTs Find someone who is teaching a similar year group to you and discuss: the things you have enjoyed in your first few weeks of teaching the challenges you foresee in the coming months Write down three of your key challenges on the sheets provided – we will revisit these in future seminars.
