2
Problem Medicine administration errors
1.5 million people affected, thousands killed $1.5 billion annual cost FDA proposed bar code system
3
Major Objectives Reflect hospital needs
Integrate hardware and software for design Easily adaptable for hospitals and end-users HIPAA compliant
4
Solution Description Bar Coding Handheld Scanners Processing Software
Printing Capabilities for: Nurse IDs Patient Wristbands Unit Doses Handheld Scanners Wireless Database Access Processing Software Compare/Output Info
5
Factors / Metrics Three step scanning process
Visual Alert when there is an medication/patient mismatch System Saves Date/Time Size and # of Units Nurse’s Name Dose # of Total Allows Nurse’s comments Generates labels with barcodes Handheld unit is shock/fluid resistant Easily viewable information
6
Goals for the Final Product
Interface with: Accounting/Billing system Hospital Inventory system Personnel system Pharmacy/Prescription Information Verify administration time window Provide automatic charting Relevant data backups w/ PharmaSys Allow for customizable configurations

Project Sponsor Patrick Harris visiting January 24 – 26
Aiming to get basic prototype for program completed Includes GUI and subfunctions Also shooting for acquisition of all hardware components and initial integration of components
10
Software Progress With the help of Qt, most of the visual aspects of the GUI are completed. Subfunctions, like search, lookup, and compare in the databases, are close to completion.
11
Hardware Progress PDA Scanner Acquired (Symbol MC50)
Host computer, WLAN router, and barcode printer on the way. These components will be setup and integrated as soon as they arrive.
12
Inputs are numerous but simple
13
It’s all about the prototype
Print and scan barcodes Demonstrate communication with Access database Cross-check records Green means go, red means stop
14
No obstacle has been too daunting
Programming tools Hardware Hospital rules and regulations Trial and error
