The Home Front By Bashir and Dom

Home Front World War one was the first industrialized war, entire countries pooled together making efforts to provide for and help out in the war. “Homefront” was the word used for the part of the war and country not actively fighting in battles, but helping out in other ways vital to the outcome of the war. By successfully operating the homefront, the actuall fighting part of the war became much easier as they had a consistent and steady stream of supplies coming to the soldiers (guns, ammunition, food, soap, etc).

Controversies The pressure of the war drove Borden’s Government to unprecedented levels of involvement in the day-to-day lives of citizens, but not to widespread spread rationing or wage and price controls. However, rising prices, shortages, and scarcity of labour led to strikes, charges of wartime profiteering and economic uncertainty. Women working in the factories. As labour was scares women went into factories to work to make guns, ammunitions, and equipment. They were an invaluable contribution to the war effort.

Help for Families at Home
The Canadian Patriotic Fund raised money during the war, for the families and wives of soldiers who were serving on the front. April 1915: $ was distributed between families, with an average payment to help families of 18.71$ September 1925: The Canadian Patriotic fund distributed $ was distributed between about families. Money went a lot farther in those days, the price for goods, ammunition, and materials grew exponentially during World War one.

Food Trouble at Home One of the biggest problems experienced during WW1 on the home front was food, as it was greatly reduced. Cheaper and more abundant foods became more of a staple than ever before, for example. Before world war one, the average Canadian consumed about 29 pounds of fish per year, during the war it drastically rose to 125 pounds per person. This shows how times were tough, as the consumption of poultry and beef drastically lowered along with this. Hoarding was prohibited and people could be persecuted for it.
