What do the greetings have in common
What do the greetings have in common? Why do you think it is important to know how to greet others? How do we greet others in the United States?
4
As Leaders, it is important that we can conduct a proper greeting including a proper handshake.
5
We will award our finest greeters in a contest. It will be our first

What is the Hurricane Shake?
The Hurricane Shake is a competition where students will have to prove their ability to have the best etiquette and perfect handshake! On October 30, SSMS finalists will compete for the title by having the opportunity to interact with leaders from all over SCPS!

How will we choose the 30 finalists?
Next week we will pick one class winner. These top 100 winners will compete on 10/24 and the final 30 will be chosen. On October 30th, the students will compete in the final round and our top three students will be awarded!

How can I deliver a proper greeting and handshake?
9
First, gather information about the person you are greeting.
Observe Body Language -Facial Expressions, Eye Contact, Posture Listen to the tone of voice -Happy, Sad, Frustrated, Angry, Confused Observe Personal Circumstances -Is the person holding packages, have small children, or do they have special needs? How might these factors impact your approach?
10
Now, it is time to greet the person.
Make eye contact and smile!! Use a greeting: Hello, Good Afternoon, Good Morning Introduce yourself, use your first and last name. Shake hands
11
When Shaking Hands… Use your right hand
Use an appropriate grip – A limp handshake is just the worst! The second worst is the hand-crusher. A good gauge for how tightly or loosely to grip the other person’s hand is about how hard you turn a well-working doorknob. You don’t have to squeeze too hard, but you must wrap your hand and fingers around the whole knob in order to get it to turn. Timing, timing! A handshake should last as long as it takes to either have both people say their names or for each of you to say “it’s nice to meet you”. That’s it! Don’t rush to let go and don’t hang on longer, as both will make the other person feel awkward.

Watch these videos to review the elements of a greeting!

Let’s practice! Your teacher will guide you through an activity.
