Why it works Gives space to think
Written conversation slows down our thoughts – allows us to really clarify them Opportunities to take on board and respond to ideas of others Time to consider a ‘big question’ Engages those who aren’t necessarily ‘talkers’ Confidence and comfort levels move up as pupils partake more regularly

Over 2 000 years ago, many Jewish people lived in Israel
Over years ago, many Jewish people lived in Israel. The most holy place for the Jews was in Jerusalem which was a city in Israel. High on a hill in Jerusalem stood their temple. Inside the temple was a golden oil lamp called a menorah. It had seven branches – each one was filled with very special oil and burned day and night to remind Jewish people of G-d.
17
At this time, Israel was ruled by the Syrian Greeks and although they followed different religions, everyone lived together in peace. Everything changed for the Jews when a new Greek king came to the throne. He was called Antiochus and wanted Jewish people to stop learning about and following their religion. He wanted them to follow the Greek religion and pray to Greek gods.
18
Antiochus ordered his soldiers to break into the Jewish temple
Antiochus ordered his soldiers to break into the Jewish temple. The soldiers put statues of Greek gods inside. They broke the pots of special oil and knocked over the menorah. The lights of the menorah went out!
19
Some of the Jews decided to fight back
Some of the Jews decided to fight back. They were led by a man named Judah. Jewish people called him Judah Maccabee because Maccabee means hammer in Hebrew. His army was called the Maccabees.
20
Although the Maccabee’s army was strong, the Greek army was stronger
Although the Maccabee’s army was strong, the Greek army was stronger. The Greek army had many soldiers, horses, powerful weapons and elephants whilst the Maccabees did not. But the Maccabees would not give up. For three years, the Jewish army fought and fought against the Greeks.
21
Amazingly, at the end of three years, the Maccabees defeated the Greeks. Lots of Jewish people thought it was a miracle. Jewish men and women marched to Jerusalem and went straight to the temple…and found that it was in ruins. So they worked hard to clean up the temple and put everything right.
22
Of course, they wanted to relight the menorah, but could only find enough special oil to last for 1 day. This was a problem because it took 8 days to make new oil and Jewish people believed that the menorah should stay alight all the time. Some people say another miracle happened at that time – the tiny bit of oil stayed alight. It burned and burned and burned for 8 days! It lasted until new oil had been made to go in the menorah. 11:46
23
Questions we wonder or puzzle about
How did the oil last for eight days? How is oil made? Why didn’t Judah and his army give up and do what the rulers wanted? How did the small army manage to beat the bigger more powerful one? Where is Jerusalem? 24/02/2019 Copyright: RE Today Services
