8 Counseling Responsibilities
The counselors are responsible for sending all official documents through Naviance, writing the counselor recommendation if required and requested, submitting secondary school reports as needed and communicating information needed for the process. Guide you in planning and troubleshooting issues

9 Student Responsibilities
Complete your applications independently – it’s a good idea to have someone or multiple people review the application, edit essays, etc. Writing lab—colleges want to hear the STUDENT’S voice. Students are also responsible for checking their regularly as colleges and counselors often use this as a primary source of communication.

10 Submit Transcript Request Form to Counseling Office
You can find these forms in the Counseling Office or Print them directly from the Yorktown Counseling page (under “Forms”) You will find a copy of the transcript request form in the Naviance Document Library, On the YHS Counseling Website and in the counseling office. Students can include up to 4 schools per transcript request form. You must provide this document for each school you plan to apply to. This is the only way counselors will know to submit official documents. You will need to re-send transcripts in February – Mid Year Report, at this time you will need to complete the entire process again. Do not need separate $4 checks, you provide one check to Yorktown for the total amount INFO ON V-Tech There are three deadlines for the freshman application. In order to serve students and families better, we have expanded our offerings to include an early decision, early action, and regular decision deadline. Early Decision November 1 Binding Early Action December 1 Non-binding Regular Decision January 15 The Coalition Application is our only application. Virginia Tech has partnered with the Coalition for Access, Affordability, and Success. Students will go to mycoalition.org and choose Virginia Tech. The student will not need to fill out the academic profile in the Coalition application. Self-Reported Academic Record will replace transcripts and mailed test scores. Virginia Tech will be the first school in Virginia to offer the Self-Reported Academic Record (SRAR), which allows students to enter all of their high school and college level coursework as well as standardized test scores. Official transcripts and score reports will not be requested until after the student accepts our admissions offer. At that point, the student’s SRAR will be verified for accuracy. No letters of recommendation or resumes will be reviewed. This year, we will not accept letters of recommendations or resumes. These materials are not used in the review of the application. Students will have the opportunity to include their activities and honors on their Coalition application. Improved holistic review. Non-cognitive attributes are a large part of the application review. To improve our holistic review, Virginia Tech is requiring an essay section known as the “Ut Prosim Profile.” These are four short answer essays (120 words or fewer) that are reviewed by multiple members of the Virginia Tech community. Major matters in the decision process. Some majors are more competitive than others. Because we don’t always know which majors will be the most competitive in advance of examining the entire applicant pool, students should apply to the major that interests them most. If they are unsure of their interests, University Studies, Explore Technology, or the college-specific Undecided programs can be selected. There will not be a second choice major option this year. The major chosen on the application is the major for which the student will be reviewed.
