2 Carolus Linneaus Father of Taxonomy Latinized his name from Carl Linne
Created the classification system based on similarities in structure

Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species

4 Levels of Organization
The species level of organization contains only one type of organism. The smaller the level of organization, the more closely organisms are related to one another. There are three domains: Archaea, Bacteria, and Eukarya.

5 Dichotomous Keys A dichotomous key is used by scientists to identify organism. They always give two options to help identify an organism. At each step of the process of using the key, the user is given two choices; each alternative leads to another question until the item is identified.

6 Dichotomous Keys A method for determining the identity of something (like the name of a butterfly, a plant, a lichen, or a rock) by going through a series of choices that leads the user to the correct name of the item. A dichotomous key is a listing of characteristics, such as structure and behavior, organized in such a way that an organism can be identified or classified.

9 Vocab, anyone? Abdomen The back end of the insect that contains the internal organs Species A group of similar organisms, whose members can mate with one another and produce fertile offspring Genus Division of organism classification below family and above species

10 Vocab, anyone? Order Division of organism classification below class and above family, as in Carnivora, mammals that feed on other animals Family Division of organism classification below order and above genus Domain Largest division of organism classification; above kingdom
