2 What is Moodle? Course Management System (CMS)
Originally started by Martin Dougiamas Based on Social Constructionist Pedagogy -Also known as Learning Management System (LMS) or Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) -Moodle was the basis of Martin’s PhD work; now Martin has Moodle.com to provide support and/or servers for Moodlers -social constructionist related to constructivist; basic idea is learning more effectively by working as a group (social) constructing knowledge for yourself and others; Moodle is best for this type of learning, but doesn’t force it.

3 Moodle is Open Source Moodle Software is Free! Community of Developers
Moodle can be Modified -as opposed to Microsoft Windows which is closed source; Linux is another popular open-source program; our system is open source as well -The software itself is free—there are costs involved in servers, bandwidth, technical expertise, etc.; however, this means that we don’t have to risk losing the software because the licensing fees have gone up -Large community of developers are working on improving and adding to Moodle; real people who are creating things based on their needs, not working on features to make more money; if there is a bug, you can report it and somebody will work on fixing it; if you want a new feature or want to tweak the program, you can—with the right technical expertise
