During this year in science you will be doing science activities
During this year in science you will be doing science activities. It is Important for you to understand how to use equipment and how to act in a science lab. Misunderstandings can lead to accidents. Safety begins with YOU! Think about being safe at all times. The following safety rules will keep you and others from being injured.

1. Always get your science teacher’s permission before beginning an activity. Never handle any material in the classroom or storage area without permission of your science teacher (This includes apparatus, chemicals, etc.).

2. Listen carefully to the instructions and make sure you understand exactly what you are to do. Follow instructions and use equipment properly.

3. Do only the experiment and activities assigned by you science teacher. Before you begin, read the activity all the way through. If you have questions, ask your science teacher.

8. Never inhale fumes directly, waft the fumes toward your nose.

9. Never eat or drink in the lab, and never use lab glassware as food or drinking containers. Never inhale chemicals. Do not taste any substance or draw any material into a tube with your mouth.

10. If you spill any chemical on yourself or table, wash it off right away with water. Report any spills to your science teacher and your lab partner.

11. If a fire should break out in the classroom or if your clothing should catch fire, STOP, DROP, and ROLL. A fire extinguisher should be used on equipment not people. Never run!

12. Report ANY accident or injury, no matter how small, to your science teacher. Report broken equipment, damaged or defective facilities, and unidentified chemicals to your teacher immediately.

Clean-up Safety It is also important to be aware of safety when you clean up after an activity. Follow these procedures as you clean up your work area.

Return all materials to their proper place.
Dispose of chemicals and other materials as directed by your science teacher. Clean your work area thoroughly. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after working in the lab. Never take anything out of the laboratory/ science classroom unless specific permission has been granted by your science teacher.

Listen Remember that if you are talking while instructions are being given, you are missing important information. The time used in talking takes away from our lab time. Labs are meant to be a learning experience. If we follow the rules, they can also be fun!
