1. Progressive Legislation
History:
By the early 1900’s many people began to feel as though they had lost control of their government. Between the “spoils system”, political machines and graft the belief that government was corrupt extended throughout society. In response the people pressed for dramatic reform including referendums, recalls and direct election of federal senators. The result was a period where the American people had a tighter grip on their government.

2. Activity:
Many people today feel that the government is no longer in the hands of the people and some might say corrupt. Events like the War in Iraq, a struggling economy and constant scandals involving our elected officials help to increase this view. If government today is becoming more corrupt what can we do to stop it? What actions or laws could we enact to prevent the government of today from resembling the government of the early 1900’s?
