DNA memory I/O Future of computing & unattended bio-monitoring
George Church, Harvard Medical School NEW IDEAS “DNA computing” so far focused on computing (slow relative to silicon). This project, in contrast, explores one of the few working sub-nanometer input/output, memory & manufacturing processes. The major challenge is integration with silicon computing while maintaining the nano-size advantages. IMPACT Future of computing & unattended bio-monitoring 3D memory arrays nm3 per bit (current: 1014 nm3 ) Input: light, chemicals/toxins Output: nm-scale positioning SCHEDULE Light-mapped DNA arrays Cell lineage In situ map (Sep’01) Sep’ Sep’ Sep’04 (Sep’05) Single base memory extension array test Field test kilobyte record & readout
