Figure 1 Regulation network for HSCs quiescence. The quiescence of HSCs is tightly controlled by the regulation network, including HSC-intrinsic regulatory mechanisms and extrinsic regulatory mechanisms. Both regulatory mechanisms contain positive (→) and negative regulators (—). Among these HSC quiescence regulators that have been identified thus far, the majority are positive regulators, few are negative for the maintenance of HSCs quiescence. It appears that various positive regulators of HSC quiescence are actively restricting proliferation within the stem cell pool, and that there may exist signals in the environment to promote HSC proliferation (?).
