The practice of stenciling has always been around
The practice of stenciling has always been around. Stenciling is a technique used to mass produce text or images – from labeling a ship’s cargo to branding a military vehicle with an insignia.

Nowadays, artists and graphic designers have embraced its simplicity to reproduce text and images. It has evolved from the urban art/graffiti trends seen throughout the 80’s and 90’s. It’s appearing on walls, clothes and print material.

Stencil art visually communicates ‘popular culture’, just as graphic novels (comic books), movies and fashion do. Most recently it has appeared as the main ‘aesthetic’ in music videos by Star Sailor and Mylo.

Stencil Art is a major ingredient in the current ‘culture jamming’ trend. Artists ‘spray’ their message in urban environments to communicate to a large audience. Though it is now fairly mainstream, stencil art is essentially a method used to convey a political or social justice message.
