Texas annexation (1845) What prevented US from annexing Texas right away? They didn’t want to upset Mexico Anti-slavery citizens in the North feared the extension into the Southwest (Texas was big in population and size) Polk merges Texas annexation with Manifest Destiny and Oregon Territory, and not slavery, as the just cause for Texas becoming the 28th state When Polk wins election in 1844, Tyler considers that a mandate for expansion and he passes joint resolution that annexes Texas at the end of his term!!
