Year 2 to Year 3 Transition meeting

Purpose of the meeting Recognise some of the challenges children face in this transition. Identify arrangements put in place. Recognise similarities and differences between Year 2 and Year 3. Opportunity to ask questions

Challenges children may face
Transition from one key stage to another can be a challenge in a child’s educational life. Changes children experience: Change of environment Change of teacher Change of class structure Different expectations as they get older. First experience of moving classroom, changing teacher. Although change from primary to secondary is difficult, the children are older and understand the change better. Video

What we’re doing in preparation
Year 2 children have had play times with the Key Stage 2 children. Year 2 children will have a teaching experience, with their teacher, in a Year 3 classroom. Year 3 teachers will visit Year 2 classes. Children will visit their new classes and teachers for an afternoon on the 10th July. Parents meet the teacher afternoon at on Monday 17th July. Some may have told you, but if my own personal experiences is to go by you get little info.

Mainly sit at desks Carpet Area Interactive White Board Display Table Drinks go in tray in classroom Book bags go into drawers Fruit Classroom Organisation Reading Corner Mainly sit at desks Interactive White Board Display Table Drinks go in tray in classroom Book bags go into drawers Own healthy snack to be eaten at morning break. Children begin to write in pen when their handwriting is neat. Not many differences I know year 2 have been sitting more at desks in readiness for year 3

Routines – Beginning of the day
Parents are asked to encourage their children to come into the cloakroom on their own. Children to place belongings in cloakrooms in a tidy fashion. Children are expected to check the board and follow any instructions written there. Children will either read or carry out a task which has been set by the teacher. If you need to see the teacher please do come in. If a longer meeting is required, see the teacher at the end of the day or arrange an appointment. Routines mainly the same as year 2 We do welcome parents into classroom if they need to have a quick word. Activities on board maths word square reading, it may be get things ready.

PE Kits Please leave PE kits in school in
case there are last minute changes to timetables. We will send them home every half term break. Indoor and outdoor PE kit needed throughout the year. Please label everything! Amount of clothing left after lesson No seems to knows whose it is until next pe lesson when someone says i cant find my...

Behaviour Rewards: Name in brilliant box. Name drawn weekly and trophy sent home to keep for a week. Earning Golden time Consequences: 1. First warning 2. Second warning 3. Lose 5 minutes playtime 4. Lose 5 minutes golden time 5. See senior teacher 6. Talk to parents 7. Continued independence
We expect the Year 3 children to become more independent by: Coming in by themselves. Looking after personal belongings. Remembering to hand in letters, home learning and showing teacher messages written in Home School message book. Finding the learning resources they need. Again very similar to year 2 What to do when they have finished, can i use

Reading Guided reading in small groups is the main method of hearing readers. Children change their own books even if they are on the reading scheme. Children begin to record their reading in the Home School Message Book. Most reading carried out in small similar ability groups. Some 1:1 reading Children choose own books are guided to the correct level, some chosen. May find choose a book which is too difficult if feel inappropriate then encourage them to change it. Recording in book date tile pages read. 5 or more different date entries a week get a name and square towards golden time. Video Those who become more confident can start recording comments Children should record their reading with a date and pages read. Reward given for those filling in 4 different dates. Stickers will be used when child has read in group, individual remarks will be made if 1:1 reading Please use HSM book for messages, but ask children to show it to teacher. HSM checked once a week to monitor reading Started in year 2

Home Learning Reading every day
Spellings given out and tested weekly. Children should practise these in their spelling book. There will usually be a literacy or maths activity once a week or a research activity based on a current area of the curriculum. Maths home learning for first half term is times tables. Please support your child’s Home Learning but let them do their own writing/drawing/typing! Please continue to practise reading, spelling and maths skills with your child over the summer holidays. Remember, children can still use the online resource Purple Mash. Home learning will be completed in books. The Universal Infant Free School Meals scheme finishes at the end of year 2. If you are in receipt of benefits, your child may still be eligible for free school meals. You can apply at: northamptonshire.gov.uk/freeschoolmeals or you can see Mrs Batchelor who can assist with the application.

Can you help? We are always looking for extra help with reading, either regularly or as and when you can. Help with topic areas/trips Please let your child’s teacher know! Often find parents think we don’t need the help.
