Week 8 Vocab Definitions

Meiosis A type of cell division that produces gametes for sexual reproduction and allows for variation Homologous Chromosome Chromosomes that pair up during meiosis containing genes for the same traits

Crossing Over The exchange of genetic material between homologous chromosomes that is a source of variation Nondisjunction Is the failure of homologous chromosomes to separate properly during meiosis Haploid Gamete cells that contain only half of the chromosomes normally found in the organism

microtubules that move chromosomes during cell division.
Diploid Body cells that contain pairs of the chromosomes normally found in the organism Spindle Fiber microtubules that move chromosomes during cell division. Gamete Sex cell (egg or sperm)

Somatic cell Body cell (muscle, nerve, blood, skin, etc.) Locus the specific location of a gene or DNA sequence or position on a chromosome
