2. Transferable Skills
Everyone has “learned” abilities and “natural” abilities. Learned abilities refer to our skills and natural abilities refer to our talents. Learned abilities are skills you develop throughout your life and can apply to a variety of situations. So what are transferable skills? Transferable skills: the skills and abilities you have acquired during any activity in your life – your classes, projects, part-time work, volunteer work, babysitting, hobbies, sports, virtually anything – that are applicable to what you want to do in your next job. How do transferable skills differ from job-related skills? Job-related skills: the skills that you use while in a particular job. For ex., a dental hygienist would know how to use the dental technology for cleaning teeth and how to take x-rays. The dental hygienist’s ability to keep patients’ records could be a transferable skill.

Why are transferable skills so important?
Bottom line: Transferable skills are essential for success in the competitive/global marketplace that we are in now. These are the skills that are applicable from job to job and to a variety of work settings.
The combination of:
strong academic and thinking skills,
strong technical skills,
commitment to lifelong learning,
the ability to work in teams,
and to communicate effectively
are constantly emphasized among employers as basic skills for everyone in this competitive job market.

“Employability Skills are the critical skills you need in the workplace—whether you are self-employed or working for others. Employability Skills include communication, problem solving, positive attitudes and behaviours, adaptability, working with others, and science, technology and mathematics skills.”

5. SMART Goals To improve skills, focus on SMART Goals:
Specific- Get 80% in Math
Measurable- Exercise 40 minutes 2x a week
Achievable- Save 15% of what I earn this year
Realistic- Learn how to play the guitar
Timely- Finish my project by October 15

6. Skills T-Charts
In your small group, reflect on the elements of your chosen skill category
Create a T-Chart (Looks like / Sounds like)
Write as many concise, precise action statements as you can to reflect your chosen skill (ie. How could you describe this skill on your résumé?)

Wiki Reflection #6: Browse the Employability Skills handout. Identify two skills that you believe you could improve on. For each, share an achievable, SMART goal that would help you build that skill.
