1 Counterargument/Rebuttals
Argumentative Essay Counterargument/Rebuttals

2 COUNTERARGUMENT What would somebody say against you?
NEGATIVE Counterargument Some people note that offering money as an incentive has been shown to increase student motivation. Rebuttal However, several studies show this increase is only temporary.

3 COUNTERARGUMENT What would somebody say against you?
NEGATIVE Counterargument There are those who point out that cash programs have resulted in an increase of students taking A.P. tests. Rebuttal This may be true, but I would argue that simply increasing the numbers of those taking the test is not and indicator of student achievement.

4 COUNTERARGUMENT What would somebody say against you?
NEGATIVE Counterargument Some may argue extrinsic motivations, like money, give students something to aim for. Rebuttal I would argue that students would benefit more by developing intrinsic motivations for success.

5 COUNTERARGUMENT What would somebody say against you?
Positive Counterargument There are some that may feel offering money wrongly teaches children that money is the main reason to achieve. Rebuttal However, students can feel personal satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment by earning money through their successes.

6 COUNTERARGUMENT What would somebody say against you?
Positive Counterargument There are those who believe schools are failing to prepare children, so money won’t help. Rebuttal Yet, I would suggest students’ struggles in this country are more a result of lack of interest in school and testing in general.

7 COUNTERARGUMENT What would somebody say against you?
Positive Counterargument I understand some of data shows cash rewards have not always increased student achievement scores. Rebuttal However, data also shows some positive results from these programs as well.

8 The counterargument must begin the paragraph.
The counterargument must be a clear statement against your position. The counterargument must be short and specific. The rebuttal must immediately follow the counterargument. The rebuttal must DIRECTLY respond to the counter. The rebuttal must be supported. (explanation, quotation, commentary) The rebuttal acts as the topic sentence of your paragraph
