4 The arrangement of two or more things for the purpose of comparison.
Key Terms Juxtaposition Coming of Age Voice Inference Flashback A process in which a person faces a conflict, realizes more about the world around them, and grows in maturity. A writer or speaker’s distinctive use of language to express ideas, as well as his or her persona. To come to a conclusion about ideas or information not directly stated, based on reasoning and evidence. An interruption or transition to a time before the current events in a narrative. The arrangement of two or more things for the purpose of comparison.

5 Learn something about the world
Coming of Age Learn something about the world Grow in maturity Face a conflict Character’s growth process begins when he or she is faced with loss or discovery. Character loses innocence and struggles with the knowledge that the (adult) world is a complex place. The “absolutes” of childhood no longer exist; the world is more grey than it is black and white. Character’s growth is characterized by clashes between personal desires and the “rules” or “social order” of adult society. Character tries to establish his or her own “rules” as he or she attempts to become an active participant in the world. Character finds his or her place in adult society. Is it a good fit? (It’s not always a comfortable or successful fit.)
