Culture: The values, beliefs, language, rituals, customs and rules associated with a particular society or social group. Values: Values are the beliefs and principles that establish what is important and seen as worthwhile in a society, what is good or bad, what we are proud of, and what should be avoided. Socialisation: The process of learning the usual ways of behaving in a society. Primary socialisation: The first stage in the socialisation of children that normally takes place within the family. Secondary socialisation: The socialisation that takes place as we move into social settings beyond the family or place of our primary socialisation, e.g. nursery, school and friendship groups. © Owned by or under licence to Harcourt Education Ltd 2007

Social status: A social position within a society or group, e.g. doctor, nurse, mother or carer, which carries with it particular social expectations or expected ways of behaving.
