5. Engage
Oscar Romero was Archbishop of San Salvador. He was assassinated on Monday March 24th 1980 as he was celebrating Mass. He embraced a simple lifestyle; he was a popular preacher who responded with real compassion to the plight of the poor. From his pulpit Archbishop Romero became the voice of the voiceless. He spoke the truth of what was happening; he denounced the killings, the torture and the disappearances of community leaders; he demanded justice and recompense for the atrocities committed by the army and police and he set up legal aid projects and pastoral programmes to support the victims of the violence. Romero realised he was going to be killed. And he came to accept it.

Do you think what Oscar Romero did was the right thing?
What communities are meaningful to you?
What would be important enough for you to stand up for like Oscar Romero did for his community?
Discussion techniques - Go back to the Bible passage ask “How does the theme link with the Bible passage?”
Discuss the question in pairs for 30 seconds then invite a response from each pair.
Use quick-fire answers e.g. throw a soft bean bag / toy to a student, when they answer they throw it back and you quickly throw to another student.
Simplify the question - Invite quick one-word answers, write them on the board, then reflect on the answers – see connections.
Activity suggestion … Think of one thing in your community that you are passionate about. This could be your faith. How can you have the courage to stand up for this in the coming week?

God, help us to have the courage to stand up for what we believe in. Help us to be wise in doing this, being mindful not to upset others. Thank you for the example of others that we can look up to who had the courage to fight for what was right.
